Mass spectrometry metabolomics workshop
in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 24-27th February 2009

This workshop is jointly organised by the Department of Nutrition, University of Copenhagen
in collaboration with NuGO and SYSDIET, a NORDFORSK NCoE

Metabolomics based on mass spectrometry is developing quickly, and an increasing number of nutrition studies employing these techniques are published every year. The sequence of techniques from sample collection to advanced data analysis spans many different disciplines and it is therefore difficult to keep pace with the developments within this field.

A NuGO workshop was arranged in 2007 in Clermont-Ferrand to create a collective overview of the state of art and it is now time to follow up on this event. The aim of this workshop is to enhance the quality and comparability of mass spectrometry metabolomics in nutrition. The programme covers recent developments in nutritional metabolomics and focuses on best practice for several of the technical, data handling and statistical steps in metabolomics analysis by mass spectrometry.

Objective: agree updated technical standards (best practice procedures) for metabolomics work using LC-MS and GC-MS techniques in order to:

  • Identify and better control the main sources of technical variability
  • Optimize the amount and quality of the biological information generated
  • Discuss key technical options for the future of metabolomics in nutrition
  • Share experiences in mass spectrometry metabolomics in nutrition
  • Discuss the specific use of non-targeted and targeted approaches
  • Introduce students in this field to best practice procedures
We hope to attract those actively involved in this research, experienced researchers as well as students who are recent newcomers in this field. We expect around 60 participants in total including NuGO and SYSDIET members, invited speakers and other interested scientists. All presentations and discussions at this workshop will be in English

The study load for this course is 4.0ECTS credits. This is an advanced course.

Venue: DGI byen (Center of Copenhagen, behind the Copenhagen Central Station and just 15 minutes by train from airport). DGI byen is conference centre combined with a modern swimming and exercise center. It has facilities for all sorts of sports and an ’aquarium’ restaurant in the middle of a huge swimming pool area.

Programme (w.e.f. 5th January 2009)
The programme is split into sessions based on stages in the metabolomics workflow, each with an introductory lecture, some contributed oral presentations and posters.

Important dates:
  • First announcement 1st October 2008
  • Second announcement 1st November 2008
  • Deadline for abstracts 15th December 2008
  • Acceptance letter to participants 20th January 2009
Registration and workshop participation fees:

The participation and accommodation is free for NuGO and SYSDIET members and for selected applicants coming from the Nordic and Baltic countries who may apply to be covered by SYSDIET.

Participants must contribute an abstract

Travel: costs must be paid by the participants

Others: €400 for participation and accommodation

Accompanying persons sharing a double room with a participant and wishing to share our meals will be charged €400, but they cannot attend the worshop. There is no programme for accompanying persons.

Payments must be made immediately after acceptance. Cancellations free-of-charge may be made until 1st February 2009. After that date refunds will not be possible.

Registration: please complete the form (WORD or pdf - below), and send it to Suzanne Møller (suzm@life.ku.dk)

Abstracts should be a maximum of one page in 12 pitch with 3 cm margins on all sides including any graphics, tables and references, and should contain a title, authors and abstract text divided into background, methods, results and conclusions sections. Abstracts should be sent as attached word files to Suzanne Møller (suzm@life.ku.dk)

The scientific committee will select presentations for poster or oral presentations within the sessions. A participant can submit more than one abstract. The abstract book will be posted on the NuGO and SYSDIET websites after the workshop.
